Income line: I have ridden my Dory on Lake Michigan 3 times and it has worked great every time. For those interested in a Rover but don't want to spend a lot of money, this is a good choice. You will use it with a mobile device to control the rover, as well as some other small things (e.g. extra o-rings). It is very easy to use - just download the app (available for iOS or Android), connect the tether to the buoy and submarine, log in to the Wi-Fi network using the password provided by Chasing Buoy on, and your device will automatically connect to the submarine. . From now on it's time to go! On my three dives I've used my dory from the shore of Lake Michigan, from calm water to moderate impact in 5 knot NE winds. It's generally easy to use from my phone, even without the remote control that can be bought as an add-on. The app is easy to use and the controls are very efficient. It can easily calibrate Dory's internal sensors and even collect temperature/water depth data. Handling becomes more difficult as wave conditions get rougher, but that's to be expected and would apply to any tethered rover (which they all are). Three vertical thrusters make this little sub more stable than it could be. The Wi-Fi signal extends 50 feet, giving you up to 100 feet of horizontal movement and 50 feet of vertical movement with the tether. It was more than enough to see everything from shore and would have been amazing from a boat. However, 50 feet is the vertical limit. So if you want to go deeper, it is better to choose another option. a safety line connecting the buoy to shore (or boat) - you don't want the buoy accidentally floating out of Wi-Fi range - if that happens you'll get wet to save your sub. As an alternative, it would be nice if the buoy had a molded plastic ring or something else for the line to attach to. This is easy to do with a baby rod, a kite reel and a small bobber or whatever, but I'd rather see the engineers come up with something optimal. 2) Similarly, it would be very useful to have a secondary secure connection between the tether and the rover, i.e. a second place to secure the tether behind the connection point. I'm skeptical about hoisting a sub on a line, but sometimes it becomes necessary when lowering/pulling out of the water. 3) A tether would be very helpful. Overall I like Dory, its price is great for what you get in the ditch world and it fits my use case perfectly.
