Review on πŸ“· Nikon Recon Gear: Advanced Retractable Rangefinder Tether for Precision and Convenience by Wayne Drakh

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works but not as well as some say and expensive for what it does

I use it for deer hunting not fishing so keep that in mind. It's a gear holder/retractor and I think it works. It's not a "quiet whisper" or even a particularly quiet one. I have a cheap $3 key winder and this one is about as loud in dB but with a lower tone (because it's bigger). I wouldn't want to pull it out or pull it in when a deer is around. Mine also has a frequent but sporadic "pop" when retracting, which is related (uncontrolled) to how the cable wraps around the spindle. Occurs at about 2/3 of retraction. The tension is not constant over the length of the string. Attached to a Nikon rangefinder, it doesn't fully retract without assistance. When it's attached and you jump or push it, sometimes it fully retracts, sometimes not. After extending, it seems to retract about 2 or 3 inches on its own (see picture). If you pull it back fully by hand, it will stay in place until pushed again. Overall, it feels more like a $10 product than a $20 product.

Pros
  • Hunting and Fishing
Cons
  • Protection
