Review on General Technologies Corp TA300 Tachometer by Andrew Cramer

Not what I was hoping for!

I was really hoping that this tachometer would work as advertised. It's not like this. The supplied piezoelectric sensor is designed universally. The square center hole in the sensor makes four-point contact with a 6 mm or 1/4 inch diameter line. Given that the sensor generates a pulse as the fuel pressure in the rail increases due to the slight expansion of the fuel injector rail, it doesn't look like four contact points is a good idea. This makes the device very sensitive to shocks. If you have a diesel engine that doesn't vibrate, it should work. I've never seen anything like this. I tried this device. So far on two motors and on one it didn't work at all and on the other it only works at high idle or lower. The manufacturer makes piezo sensors that have full contact with the line (round center hole). 1/2" sizes. 4 inch, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm. The only problem is that so far I haven't found a source to buy sensors or their cost. So I think this thing will be a topic of conversation on my desk. I'll update this review if I find out anything. It's very handy when it works.
