Very difficult to open the battery compartment and insert batteries. The lid of the case is probably designed to be opened with the edge of a coin. You didn't make the spot where you insert the coin to rotate the battery cover deep enough. I have tried every coin that is made in the USA. I even dug up some of my foreign coins to no avail. I tried two different flat head screwdrivers. I tried it with a kitchen knife. Between twisting a cheese knife and a kitchen knife, I finally managed to open the battery compartments. It was annoying and time consuming. Batteries must be inserted face up so that the battery type is visible from above. There are two tiny metal pins on the left side of the battery compartment. You'll probably have to use your fingernail to lift the teeth slightly. Insert the battery under the contacts until it clicks into place. Gently press the contacts against the battery. Once you put the batteries in, everything is fine. Just place them where they are needed. I assembled all four to try them out. They varied within 2 degrees. I love this type of freezing thermometer; However, I've had similar ones in the past that were much easier to use. Most came when you simply ripped the plastic tab off the battery and they were ready to go.
