I have tried several cartridges without a chip. After a while everything started making strange noises and the chips were very difficult to change. These work great with no problems. Now it is the case that these are used chips that do not show the correct toner levels. If you need a level indicator, you need to buy an original cartridge. However, having saved a few hundred, I can live without an indicator and just switch them out when the ink starts to lighten.
