Review on Convenient USB Volume Control: DROK PC Speaker Audio Remote Knob with Mute Function - Compatible with Win7, 8, 10, XP, Mac, Vista, Android by Brian Piecuch

Revainrating 5 out of 5

So good I bought four of these!

I bought three of these before, back when they had a micro USB port in the case. They now feature a more convenient USB-C connector, but are otherwise physically the same. This button is reminiscent of the finest Japanese latch buttons from the 1980s. The body is solid, heavy, has rubber feet and doesn't move when you press the handle. But it can be much more than just a volume control! By using Firmware Genius (I'm talking about someone who has written firmware my entire career) you can fully customize it without installing any software. It uses a regular text editor (Notepad, Textpad, Sublime, etc.) and creates menus that you scroll through by turning a knob. You then select functions by pressing the button down. If you want the handle to be a scroll wheel, you can do that. If you want it to simulate horizontal or vertical mouse movements, no problem (you can have an Etch-a-Sketch interface for your computer with two of these :). I've set mine to send the Shift-Mac-Volume-Up/Down option for normal rotation, giving me 4x more precise control. Rotate-while-press sends the Mac's volume knob up/down to increase or decrease the volume faster. On my Windows PC I use one of these to tune a station on my Software Defined Radio (SDR) which I use for amateur and shortwave listening. My biggest fear is that if quality options like these don't survive, stupid consumers will buy something cheaper that's nowhere near as good, and eventually condemn everyone to buying junk.

Pros
  • nice thing
Cons
  • frequency
