Ideal for 12V PV systems

These devices are great for monitoring the performance of 12V PV systems. I use two of these in my small RV. One is to control solar panel output power and battery charging rate by 4P2T slide switch for selection, the other is to control battery discharging rate during DC-AC inverter operation. I compared the current and voltage readings with the FLUKE DVM and they were within 1% over most of the range (10-20V and 0-30A) of my application. It is very nice to see the solar energy collected from the array of photovoltaic panels as well as the general use of the camper van. Just a few pointers for those who have a similar application: First, place the solar charge controller as close to the battery(s) as possible. practical and use the thickest copper (not copper clad aluminum CCA). Good MPPT charge controllers have a battery charge algorithm that looks at the battery voltage across the charge controller terminals. Under difficult charging conditions, there can be a SIGNIFICANT voltage drop between the charge controller output and the battery terminals, which can lead to suboptimal battery state of charge. The second MPPT charge controllers can generate quite a bit of electromagnetic noise, which in my experience affects the readings from these gauges if the sensor cable to the shunt is more than a few feet long. Adding decoupling capacitors to the meter inputs helped a lot.

Pros
  • Hands-free operation
Cons
  • Some disadvantages
