Review on Sony ICF CD815 Stereo Discontinued Manufacturer by Cynthia Smith

Quiet CD start but no backup battery

The device spins a CD very quietly and you can wake up to what's on the CD instead of a buzzer or radio. You can choose the track on the CD you want to wake up to. There are three levels of brightness adjustable, the lowest emits very little light so I can't read it in a shady room during the day. It's all very nice. I found the controls a bit difficult to understand, but I figured it out eventually. The block is not small; You can get a good idea of its 3D size by looking at the circular area in the photos above. In comparison, this round surface is slightly larger than a CD. This device has one major drawback: there is no backup battery. I don't know what design compromises the designers were thinking of when making this decision, if they were even thinking about it, but it seems like a really silly oversight. I will be using this unit for a while until I find a reliable alarm clock on a CD that has battery backup so I can rely on it to wake me up at the set time. I don't want to use my phone or other device as a backup: (1) having to use a second device makes it more difficult, (2) I prefer to keep my phone off the bed so it doesn't get in the way of me getting up, when i want to sleep

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Fade out
