Disappointing. Requires app and lots of help from dad

I genuinely regret my 7 year old son spent his Christmas bonus on this. First off, this set requires an app and you need to connect it via Bluetooth to set it up. After I did that, an update was required. The printed instructions are useless. Step 1: Collect Mario. Step 2: Download the app. That's all. Even with the app, the build was a bit confusing since this set was so simple. It seemed like a few steps were skipped, making an already frustrating setup worse, but it shows you how to put together most of the individual elements of the set. The problem was that the instructions ended there. It doesn't show you the different ways to put the pieces together. The picture on the packaging and in the application of the finished kit actually requires you to partially disassemble what needs to be assembled according to the instructions. I understand the point is that you can arrange the elements however you want to create your own Mario level, but how to achieve this in a fun way using everything the instructions/app says not work. From opening the box to when we (yes, both of us) assembled all the individual parts, it probably took over 3 hours. If you're not a fanatical parent who loves to connect their children's toys to screens, or you're just buying this to give a child to build, then this isn't for you. It looks like there are more ways to integrate the set. with the app, but the reason I (and I think most parents) love giving LEGOs to my kids is because they turn off the screens. This set is different. Now that it's all put together a bit, I don't see the fun lasting long, which is probably why they have add-ons that they want you to buy.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
