In fact, my first thought when I first opened the box was "What the heck." But I decided to tweak it and close it to bring an end to. I put up a garland and then added a strip of light. I put in AA batteries (not included). In fact, it looked very, very nice! The light has a sequence and flashes at different speeds. After about 4-5 hours, the light will turn off to save battery power, but you can turn it back on. In general I am very satisfied. It could have been a bit fuller and maybe a few more lights but for the price I think it was a good buy.
