Review on 🌑️ Maverick CT-03 Digital Oil & Candy Thermometer: Accurate Temperature Monitoring for Cooking and Baking by Andrea Bone

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Well priced thermometer

I wanted to try this after seeing Elton Brown use it in an old episode of Good Eats. This is a working thermometer but I can't give it 5 stars. I use this pretty much exclusively for making candy where I need to keep a thermometer in the pot. For everything else I use a thermal pen which I love. I was first drawn to the small drop down screen that helps keep the display from fogging up. It doesn't completely prevent screen fogging, but I think it would be worse without it. Considering how hot most candies are, I shouldn't be surprised. I also thought that alerts would be useful at different stages, but I don't use them. I'm on a high which means I have to pull things almost 10 degrees earlier, so I rely on alarms and default temps for soft ball, hard ball, etc. I end up with overcooked candy. Be sure to calibrate this before use. I didn't and paid the price. I was almost 5 degrees less. I don't consider this a downside to the product as almost all thermometers require some form of calibration. Unfortunately, you'll have to remember how it's turned off, as you can't reset the thermometer once it's calibrated. To calibrate, simply boil some water and see what temperature the thermometer reads when it boils. It should be 212, if you are not as good as me then it will be lower. All in all, this is a decent thermometer for the price. I've found it sticks to my pan better than any other I've tried. I also like the digital display for the accuracy compared to the non-digit display which is hard to read with steam and all. Again, be sure to calibrate.
