Update: I spoke to Intel tech support and they suggested trying the BIOS update again. We went into the BIOS and despite the fact that I had previously updated, it showed the old version. The latest BIOS release notes say the only solution was to fix an error installing the previous BIOS, so I must have stumbled upon that. After another BIOS update, the fans calmed down noticeably. If I put the machine to sleep while the fans are blowing, they quiet down within a minute or two and seem to stay off. For now, the only downside to this machine that I've encountered is poor 3D performance, but that's to be expected with integrated graphics. If you're impressed by its small size, don't be fooled, the power adapter is as big as the device! All of this to say that this is a great little box to run desktop Linux on and I'm very happy with it. One of the reasons I bought this is because the last two laptops I bought came with "killer" wifi, which was terrible (slow overall, very high latency). The wireless capabilities built into it are great! It's super fast, super responsive and I haven't had any lag issues. Old version: Purchased, installed memory, updated BIOS to the latest version, then installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Everything seemed to be working fine. The fan turns on and off during use for seemingly no reason. Sometimes it blows when sitting at the desktop when nothing is open (and opening a terminal and looking at the top shows nothing is using excessive CPU usage). Sometimes I do a lot of work and the fan doesn't turn on. Okay, it doesn't bother me that much anyway. My concern is that the fan just keeps blowing when going to sleep ("Suspend"). It will just blow forever (I left it overnight and in the morning it was still blowing). As soon as I wake up, it calms down and reverts to its original behavior (turning on and off, maybe due to workload, but could just be random). I've searched the web and few people have come across this problem and only one has posted a solution: they returned nuc. I'm not ready to give it up yet, so I'll contact Intel, but if they don't figure it out, I'll just have to return it. The BIOS has options to customize the behavior of the fan. and i tried changing mine from "balanced" to "quiet" and it made no difference. The BIOS has an option to set legacy suspend mode, but when I enabled it, it warned me that I would have to reinstall the operating system. No thank you.
