Works great in MBP 2015 (no crashes or side effects)

I paired this $16 Sintech card adapter with a $215 TopMore 2TB SSD. and wow, the improved performance results are impressive. No crashes or side effects of any kind. The installation process was simple: 1. Create an installation USB drive from the latest version of MacOS2. Manual backup of the original SSD via Time Machine3. Shutdown4. Remove the bottom tray with the T5/bit5 driver. Disconnect the battery from the logic board6. Remove original SSD* with T5/bit7 driver. Insert the new SSD into the Sintech adapter and install it on the motherboard using the Phillips/bit8 driver. Connect battery9. Recover the bottom tray using the T5/bit10 driver. Boot from USB to format a new SSD and install MacOS11. Sign in and use Migration Assistant to restore apps and files from Time Machine. This is a relatively simple process that can be performed by anyone with computer experience or even the slightest desire to learn. There are all sorts of videos on YouTube showing the basics of opening up a laptop to upgrade various components so you have an idea of what you're getting into. and you will see that although it requires great care, it is not difficult. (*In my specific case, I ran into a major problem when I found the original SSD was held in place by a stripped screw that I couldn't remove with the /bit driver. After some trial and error, the only solution worked in taking a drill and drilling it out, of course I had to be very careful in this operation given the consequences of making a mistake, but it ended up removing the stripped screw and being able to complete the update, overcome the disaster of discovering one blown screw in the machine, you can avoid unexpected breakdowns, just take your time)

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Out of fashion
