Our 1940's house had a built in mail slot in the outside wall. It was nice that the postman could take the mail outside and the mail fell into a box in the house, but it let in a lot of cold air in the winter and warmth in the summer. We have renovated and would like the same facility without hot/cold air. That's all. This highly durable piece is designed to fit a typical front door, which is thinner than a typical exterior wall. We wanted it to be installed in an outside wall. So that the post doesn't end up in the middle between the outside plaster and the inside drywall, we installed a wooden frame in between, which worked great. The stiff bristles really block hot/cold air. The downside is that thin mail tends to be deformed and often stays in the middle of the wall because thin mail is difficult to push through. I simply reach into the gap in the wall through the inner letter slot and pull it out. Large/thick shipments such as magazines go through without any problems. Our postman said this post office is tough and embarrassed destroying our mail trying to stuff everything in. We told him as long as nothing rips we don't mind crumpled mail, which is still better than hot/cold air coming in. We even had a hand stuck in our old Halloween mailbox demanding candy. I feel more secure with this new mailbox. Highly recommended for our purposes. If anyone has any idea how to solve thin mail wrinkling, please share. I only wish this item was available in other colors such as brushed nickel and polished nickel.
