Mine worked fine a few times and showed no signs of a leak. The readings are consistent and match what I'm getting from three "regular" kitchen thermometers to within a degree or two. However, the reality is that it solves a problem that doesn't exist. I can't usually read it through the lid, and my regular kitchen thermometers read in just a few seconds after opening the lid. It sounded like a good idea but doesn't really help with the slow cooker. I can use my regular kitchen thermometer to take readings in meat or liquid and neither would benefit from leaving the thermometer there. If I could read this well without opening the lid it would be a small benefit in terms of temperature retention, but a minute of chilling in an average 6-10 hour cook cycle probably won't make a difference. Anywhere it is important to maintain a certain temperature in an open pot on the stove, this comes in handy as it frees my hands. I'm sure there are situations like this, but I haven't found that with the slow cooker.
