We are so happy with our little Dash. I wasn't sure if it was worth buying based on the negative reviews but a lot seemed to come from people who had never made homemade ice cream before so we took a chance. I'm glad we did! This year I planted chocolate mint, so I made chocolate mint ice cream out of it - you can't buy that in the store! β and then lemon verbena sorbet. Both came out nice and the Dash is easy to clean and store. First use: I previously had a larger Hamilton Book (but it started leaking). In comparison, Dash is smaller and easier to freeze. The instructions were VERY clear that you need to run the paddle before adding the ice cream base, so I did. It wasn't noisy at all. While my HB made ice cream in about 10 minutes, Dash's guide rated it 30, so I knew I had to be patient - I had perfect ice cream in about 18 minutes. The spatula doesn't scratch the walls so after spilling out there was a thin layer of ice stuck to the walls and floor so I rotated it with a plastic tool and added to the rest of the ice no problem. (You can also just let it thaw a bit). Since then I've been making sherbet and whatnot (using one of the recipes that came with the machine) and Dash is a little workhorse. No problem, and the fun red color is a bonus! Check the size to know what you're getting. It's perfect for our family but a bit small for some. We had no problems with it, but we did follow the instructions to run the paddle before adding the base (a funnel is very useful but not included) and let the unit warm to room temperature before using it afterwards wash (it's very easy). clean and how it fits together is very intuitive). ONE NOTE: As said, many of the negatives seem to have never made homemade ice cream! Everything should be cold - Place Dash in the freezer the night before, but then make a sorbet or ice cream base and refrigerate overnight. I really like it because it means we can just pull it out and go! And yes, when the machine is complete it will NOT be as heavy as store bought. With any ice cream maker, expect the ice cream to be "done" in consistency a little more than soft serve, sorbets a little more than slush, and then pour/scoop them into a freezer container (I only use Tupperware) and set back in the freezer to harden. Ice hardens well, but never gets as hard as store-bought. However, your homemade sorbet can turn into ice cream. If this happens, 20 seconds in the microwave will thaw it enough to serve, no big deal. (You can also add a dash of vodka and this will prevent hypothermia in the freezer, but of course only do this if you're feeding it to consenting adults!)
