I consider myself an avid amateur photographer. I also take photos for my blog, which I create as part of my job as a writer and researcher. For my purposes, this camera is perfect. It feels good in my hands and the zoom lens allows me to focus clearly on subjects even in a large lecture hall. I'm still learning all the functions. The pocket guide is useful but I would recommend downloading the manual. A very helpful review from another buyer includes a link to download the PDF document. Several test reports mention the missing viewfinder as a shortcoming. I took photos with my iPhone, so the lack of a viewfinder doesn't bother me. Plus, the ability to add a memory card (which is really necessary) means I can take as many photos as I want without worrying about storage space, which has become an issue with my iPhone. Your mileage may vary. I also like the ability to change the shutter speed on this camera. Before I got my iPhone, I used a 5 megapixel Kodak EasyShare camera. It takes decent pictures but the shutter speed is so SLOW I lost a lot of great shots. And I'm not talking about quick recordings, I'm talking about expressive recordings from the loudspeaker. Disappointing! Battery life seems normal when using lithium batteries instead of regular dry cell batteries. Using lithium batteries is convenient when you travel, especially abroad, but you can also use rechargeable batteries with an external charger. If you're concerned about batteries being thrown away and ending up in landfills (I was), there are often local recycling facilities (http://www.earth911.com/recycling-guide/how-to-recycle) . -single-use-batteries/), or you can recycle your batteries for free by mail (http://batterycenter.com/battery-recycling-program.html). Maybe. Finally, I really like that it looks like a real camera, not a pocket camera. This may sound superficial, but I've already noticed that I'm treated more like a pro when I go to events and like the press when I use this camera instead of my iPhone. The red color is great too, and yes, I got positive reviews for it too. If you're a professional photographer, spend money to get a top-notch camera. This is an investment. For me, this move from a point-and-shoot bag mockup hit the spot. Very glad I made this purchase.
