The tonic does not dry out the skin. It is not astringent but leaves no sticky residue after drying. And it dries up almost immediately. It has one of those caps in the bottle opening that allows you to squeeze out a drop or two at a time. Just two to three drops give good coverage when applied to face with fingertips. I don't know how much you need if you use a cotton pad - I never do. There is a very, very light floral scent - pleasant and unobtrusive. It is not sticky and does not lie on the surface. Leather. I feel like it allows my skin to "breathe". So for me I would call it an essence and a tonic. Does it really work as a gentle exfoliant like they claim? I don't see or feel it, but that doesn't mean it's not happening - maybe it's just a gentle act. I don't have an extra spray head to try right now, but I think it's thin/light enough that I can get a fine mist out of this solution. I always prefer spray toner, it's easier to get good coverage.
