This was a gift for my parents so I didn't use it in the car but I put it together for them and showed them how the phone fits. The pins insert without much difficulty, but still seem to be tight. You have a choice of slightly longer pins for a larger device. The phone model in this case is the iPhone 5. I used longer pins on the bottom and shorter pins on the top. As a short version, it will probably work with all four contacts, but I figured it would be easier to insert a phone. The way the mount works is that you have to push the device against the bottom pins to pull the piece down, slide the top of the device under the top pins and let the spring loaded mechanism tighten the bottom piece. The only thing that surprises me is how well it works when the mount is on the windshield and not in my hand.
