My children and I live in Valdez, Alaska, which is the snowiest community in the US with an average of about 300 (three hundred*) inches of snow annually. But all that snow doesn't just pile up. Like all snow, it settles and is pressed into the ice like a glacier. (We also hold the record for most glaciers in a US municipality.) As a result, from about late October to mid-May, we only walk on ice that's sometimes 6 inches thick by the end of winter. Winter boots don't cut, cleats are a must . I've tried different boots and found that only the ones that really dig in are worth it. They're essentially mini ice climbing cleats, so I'm hoping to stay upright this winter. Will update when I use them to report anti-skid effectiveness and wear and rust resistance.
