We needed these oversized pads and wanted to paint them to match the wall. The first coat will lift the structure of the wood, so sanding is required. It took 2-3 coats with intermediate sanding before they looked acceptable. However, some have minor flaws; I'm assuming this is a property of wood, not plastic or metal.
