Review on πŸ”§ Dorman 905-512 Steering Shaft Bearing for Compatible Models by Tim Rios

Revainrating 3 out of 5

This fixed my knock in the steering wheel. But overall I'll be replacing it again in a few years.

My GMC Sierra 3500 has had steering noise for almost 10 years now. I replaced the intermediate steering shaft fairly early on, since most people cited it as the cause. I even banged on the redesigned "last intermediate shaft you'll ever need to buy" block as it looked like a headache. Well, it was a pain in the butt, but I still had a hit. Finally I decided to investigate it again and found this camp. My stock was definitely bad and it sat there long enough to get stuck. I know a lot of YT videos show how easy it is to twist a flathead screwdriver to pry it out, but mine fell apart. I had to do a lot of poking around and eventually mine came out. The green outer part was divided into 4 parts and the inner bearing and balls in the races. The new one went with no problems. Mine was really neat and had a lot of wobble and pinching, but in the end it got rid of the knock. Homemade Tip: Remove the gas pedal to get a little more room to work. All it takes is a couple of nuts and a plug, and it's worth the little effort. My main concern is that this doesn't appear to be the first time this has been replaced due to the color of the bearing removed in my truck. Generally speaking, bearings only wear out after 30,000 miles, so I'll probably do it again in a few years. I hope by then someone will come up with a new version that will solve this problem once and for all.
