They must be flat at the bottom and pointing in the right direction to properly fasten the panels. But the nice thing is that they can be removed to adjust. Do not use a hammer on the connectors unless you are sure it is properly seated. If the shelves are not level, check the connectors as they are not connected properly; The bar may have missed a slot.
