Illumination feature doesn't work but can be fixed

I, like others here, found this clock to not illuminate, even when the room was very dark. I noticed that when I placed my hand near the centre of the clock, it illuminated every time. So I placed a small piece of paper near the centre of the clock and viola! It illuminated! Now it seems to work fine. I couldn't get it to replace the clock, return was the only option and I really need this clock to work because it has the adjustable illumination feature. At least I have a band aid fix for it, might try other things to see if something else works better.

The clock has an elegant design that looks great in any space

Cons

The clock's hands are too delicate and can easily be bent or broken
