First, I bought a child-safe ink pad.
I first bought a child safe ink pad to get hand and footprints but my child's handprints were too hard to get with the ink pad so I bought this one. It was a lot easier to get my kid's handprint and a lot less mess. The printouts are not as dark as with the stamp pad, but it works. However, as other reviewers point out, it takes forever to dry. I've set the handprints up and to the side, but it's been a week now and they're still not completely dry.
