I'm a newbie who's been shooting with DLSR for a year. To be honest, I'm more of a technocrat than an artist; that is, I know the bells and whistles of this camera and the D40 and D80 that I own. It's really easier to be a technocrat than an artist. I would vehemently resist recommending this camera as anyone's first DSLR. The exception is experienced filmmakers. My reason is that the performance of this camera can only be appreciated by those who need the features that come with this pup. If you're a pro, you can stop reading now. If you're thinking about switching from another DSLR or if you're a photography enthusiast, read on. where to start IMPRESSIVE! 6fps, much better metering than my D80, solid and stable in hand, soft contrast ADR, ergonomic Nikon fingers on grip and buttons, 3" 900k pixel LCD (shockproof), 1000+ shots on a single charge (EN -EL3e), shooting at ISO 1600+ (with optional high ISO noise reduction) and the magical EXPEED engine that produces great images. The D300 makes it that much easier to get better shots. Shooting at 8fps, and yes , the Nikon grip is solid and fits the body of the D300 perfectly It shoots MUCH faster but that's another story (and another review) Flaws? The weight If you're upgrading from a backup or cheaper DSLR to this body you'll have to deal with the extra weight and may want to invest in a better strap.Throw in a battery grip and a pro lens and we'll talk about lugging around a big backpack or Ka mera bag. It's not that sexy if you travel a few miles with a light weight of 4-5 pounds and a simple body/lens combo. BTW, if you don't care about the weight and you have the money, want to shoot in low light/high ISO and shoot a lot of sports, go for the D3 and you're done. The .D300 is impressive. It's a really tough and great product with great photographer's ergonomics, state-of-the-art features, superb image reproduction and Nikon's solid construction. Go out and buy one!
