Review on Legged Thing Travis Aluminum Tripod by Jessica Morris

Revainrating 5 out of 5

ALL ROUND VERY COOL.

As advertised. Very original design with a detachable leg for quick and easy conversion into a monopod. The ball head is also a revelation, offering almost unlimited camera positioning. I've seen some people say he's weak. I have found that this is not the case at all. I suppose if I've used it in the Alps in 35km/h winds I might have some shake issues, but I've used it with a Nikon D800 and a 300mm zoom lens and it's been reliable. Only one thing keeps it from being a 5 (and that might be something they actually attached to the PRO models) but the main "B" collar that controls the center bar (and unscrews completely to remove it and convert it to a monopod). Threads on the main unit and the outer "thread" are made of plastic. Be very, very careful not to twist or overtighten the threads as it seems easy to remove (because it's plastic). I would have preferred the base/threads to be aluminum (and as I said, this may be the case with more units) but during my first exploration of my new Travis when I took out the center shaft I accidentally crossed the threads . collar during assembly. I carefully unscrewed and rethreaded it to solve the problem, but one more turn or two and I would have literally ruined the collar. This is the ONLY reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5. Just be careful with all collars (the instructions say they take no more than half a turn) and you'll be fine.

Pros
  • So far so good
Cons
  • Definitely bad product
