My daughter and I had fun and learned from this project, which takes at least three days and requires some materials from home that you may or may not have on hand. In particular, you're supposed to have two glass jars with lids that are big enough to accommodate the unicorn. We found we only needed one, as the second jar is necessary only if you're saving your "seeding solution" for future use. The booklet never explained why you need two solutions if the seeding and growing solution use the same ratio of water to crystal growing powder.I have written procedures professionally for years. The procedures could be better written, with ingredients in each step bolded and a clearer workflow. Most kids of any age will need some help with reviewing the procedures first.Allow three days for this, as mentioned above. You seed the crystals one day, grow them the second day, and grow them again the third day, with the unicorn drying in between.The way the procedures have you insert the pipe cleaners means they're almost certain to fall out during or after the growth process. I recommend cutting the pipe cleaners at least half an inch longer and bending them before inserting them so they'll have some chance of staying in the unicorn. Also, on ours, the horn is indistinguishable from the mane, so try to position your pipe cleaners to keep them separate.All that said, we still enjoyed this project and my daughter was still excited to do it and have the results.
