I am SO frustrated with this system! My 8 year old daughter wrote a speech and researched why she needs gerbils, how much it will cost, what she needs and her responsibilities. How could we refuse that?! We bought a 10 gallon tank from Walmart (MUCH cheaper than Revain since it was under $15) and then bought this topper. It looked great when we received it! However, in less than a month, they completely chewed through every piece of plastic. Ladders, Platform, Slab, EVERYTHING! Yes we know what they are chewing and we give them chew toys, cardboard, treats etc. My eldest daughter has gerbils and we know exactly what they are doing but it was crazy! However, they are animals and we take responsibility for that. The plastic will not hold gerbils' teeth. HOWEVER, Kaytee doesn't make it easy to get replacement parts. If you're using this on a gerbil or any other animal that likes to chew, I strongly encourage you to think about what you can do if they chew the whole thing through. We are currently reworking some of the aluminum parts so they don't have sharp edges and become platforms and stairs.
