I currently have three bikes but have been riding for 25 years and have many bikes. I have always repaired myself. Like anyone who has twisted a lot of things, I can pretty much hand tighten everything. But as my bikes got more expensive and made more and more carbon fiber, I decided a few years ago that using a torque wrench was a smart game! And for the vast majority of the work I do, I use one. Before ordering this new adjustable torque wrench from Pro Bike Tool, I had three torque wrenches that I used for small jobs like bike maintenance. All three have been tested using an electronic torque wrench calibration tool and they are all amazingly consistent when compared to each other! The intention was to associate each instrument with one of the three settings (4, 5 and 6Nm) and put a label on each indicating which one it is. Well I got three adjustable torque wrenches from Pro Bike Tools today and am very disappointed with what I found applying around 5.1-5.3Nm of torque before getting 8.1-8 at the advertised 6Nm of torque .3 Nm of torque before it snapped into place. I ran the same test with all three Pro Bike Tools torque wrenches and the results were all the same case over the advertised value and about the same! At whatever value I selected on the adjustable wrench, the actual torque applied was about 30% higher than expected. This is just not acceptable! uch only performs one function. And most torque wrenches need to do this over a much wider range than 4-6Nm. For this reason, it is not acceptable to continuously exceed the specified torque value by more than 30% for these tools. Of course one could use them knowing that the 4NM (listed) is actually 5.1NM and the 6NM listed is really 8+m. Miles. But what happens when you really need to brake at 4 nautical miles? What happens if you forget and accidentally apply 8.2Nm of torque to a mount that should only work with 6Nm? I am sending them back for a refund. I'll try the Park Tools model instead and hope that the Park model is almost twice the price, at least provides the right amount of torque!
