We've had a 980 Roomba for a year and a half now - it works flawlessly for the most part and is a huge improvement over our old 560 in every way Power toggles when it detects it's on a carpet, which is great. Of course, over time, the squeegees (rollers) have worn out, especially the dark gray one, which is lower and has more contact with the ground surface and therefore wears out faster. The robot still worked perfectly, but since the rollers were badly worn, I decided to buy a new set. I'm on my third set now and for some reason Roomba always switches between Eco mode (low power) and Performance Boost (high power for carpet) when new range hoods are installed, no matter what the surface. . . For some reason it also goes into "dirt detection" mode very often. It stays at high power almost constantly, briefly switching to low and then back again. Just in case, I've tried two sets of iRobot extractors and one set of non-genuine extractors and they all cause the same behavior. As soon as I reinstall the original worn out extractors, the robot behaves correctly and the problem disappears. I cleaned it from top to bottom and also found that ONLY the gray roller was causing the problem. I've currently manually set it to stay in Eco (low power) mode, but that's a ridiculous problem to say the least considering it's the top-of-the-line Roomba and it was quite expensive when we did bought it, which brings us to the real problem. After contacting iRobot about this, the suggested course of action was to replace the $60 cleaning head. The responding support rep didn't do any further questions or troubleshooting, just a lengthy, multi-paragraph guide on how to purchase a replacement module at 15% off, but only over the phone. The new vacuum cleaner cost $900. The rollers alone are $30 and I need to replace the entire cleaning head component module on the FIRST EVER change of extractors, no questions asked? I beg to differ. I'll leave it to iRobot for now, but it's not a solution and people need to know about it. The ball is on your side, Roomba boys.
