For a 1969 Amana fridge with a faulty thermostat. The old mechanical thermostat was replaced in 1991 to give the old fridge a new life for another 27 years. Well, that new 1991 thermostat is worn out now, and a new one costs about $100 if one can be found. It was found that the compressor and the rest of the parts that power the refrigeration section of the fridge are still in good working order and the fridge only needs a new thermostat to keep it running for another 27 years. This 110V AC digital temperature controller with 10A sensor relay looked promising as a replacement. And the price was right. I had to temporarily run the wires through the front magnet gasket to test this. After playing around with the high and low settings, he settled on the optimal setting, which keeps the freezer at around 12 degrees Fahrenheit. The sensor is very sensitive, and every time I opened the freezer door, the temperature rose to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The compressor started immediately. So I took a 3/4" piece of non-toxic Styrofoam insulation about 6" x 4" and stuck the sensor in. Well, it really worked. When the freezer door is open, the temperature doesn't immediately go up. and stays relatively stable. This new thermostat has been working great for about a month now and all I have to do now is somehow permanently hook it up to the fridge system inside.I can also clean the inside of the fridge while I'm at it. The instructions were a little sparse in detail, but that subtlety, combined with a little common sense, got the old Amana working again without breaking the bank. It's a pretty amazing little device and I highly recommend it for this type of application recommend. I giggled when I saw an old label on the inside of the freezer door that said "Five Year Guarantee". I manually defrost about once a month, to avoid activating the heating coils twice a day in automatic defrost mode. this saves a lot of electricity. The power consumption is roughly the same as that of a new refrigerator. I will learn more about this in the coming months. Thank you to everyone who made a great fridge and thermostat.
