Review on πŸ”§ Tavy Thin Skin 8501 Glue with 007 Super Adhesive by Tara Ford

Revainrating 4 out of 5

An easy to use system that works as advertised.

(This is a duplicate of the Tavy Fine Leather Review.) We moved into a house that had most of the ground floor tiled. Unfortunately, the tile work throughout the house was extremely poor. The tile was placed on 3/4 thick plywood and the grout cracked in places or the tile cracked because the bottom floor "moved out" of the weak base the tile was laid over. It was particularly bad in a small laundry room. I suspect the washing machine had a leak at some point. The tiles in this room literally crunched when walked on, and the grout was in bad shape. I knew that at some point I would need to redo the flooring of the entire main floor, but for now I just wanted to redo the existing laundry room. I removed the tile from the floor very easily, but now I had a difficult situation, in order to keep the floor level with the rest of the house I had to reinforce the sub-floor with some kind of underlay. The thinnest material I could find would just raise the floor too high. There were several products on the market that could be used to create an underlay that did not add an appreciable difference in floor height. I chose the Tavy system because it was available through Revain and seemed to do what I needed. My only complaint would be that the system will indicate on the website what your subfloor should be made of. If I could get the subfloor to the condition I wanted, I wouldn't have to use this system. I bought glue and sandpaper, carefully sanded the floor and removed the dust. Applying the glue was pretty messy, but I followed the directions carefully and set up a way to clean the tools after applying the glue. The thin skin was like thick paper and very easy to work with. I was able to dry cut the skin, apply glue and smooth out any bubbles fairly easily. I let the material dry for a few days before laying ceramic tiles (actually more than a week). One thing I noticed about this system is that the exposed adhesive appears to be a little sticky. Even a few weeks later, the exposed area near the vent was still showing signs of stickiness. I don't know if it was meant that way or not. Where the skin touched the glue The skin got pretty hard, so I wasn't too concerned about that. I applied a flexible, hardened layer of the solution to thin skin and let it dry. I dry cut the tile, laid it out and applied the glue. I chose a more expensive adhesive that had a few concessions, knowing my subfloor wasn't as good as I would have liked. I used FlexBond Gray 50lb. Reinforced thin-walled mortar from Home Depot. I glued the tiles and pasted as usual. The interface was easy to edit. I used a 3/8 tooth trowel and made sure the surface was level and low enough that there were no noticeable differences from the existing tiles that were still in place from another adjacent room. The entire tiling process was fairly routine from that point on. I finished the grouting and everything looked great. There was no noticeable difference in tile height from an existing room, which I left untouched, to a laundry room where the tiles were replaced. In fact, it seemed like he was there from the start. It's been over six months since I did this project and the floor is holding up great. We've moved into the washer and dryer and the room is full of people, since my garage is also connected to it. There is no noticeable skirting board and the crunch of the old tiles is gone. I don't know how long this repair will take, but so far I'm pretty happy with this system. He did what I needed and was fairly easy to work with. The only thing that worries me in the future is how difficult it will be to remove when I can replace the entire downstairs floor. I won't be doing this project any time soon, but when I do I haven't touched the laundry room where the tile was replaced. In fact, it seemed like he was there from the start.
