Excellent filter for third world countries. I've been using them in Equatorial Africa for almost 10 years and have never gotten sick from our drinking water, even though the source is a swamp a few miles away. When the filter is dirty and no longer lets water through, simply clean it with the soft side of the sponge - not too abrasive - and put the filter back into the housing. My filters last over a year before I accidentally drop them. That's the only reason I had to replace them with this cleaning method. Others have tried reverse osmosis filters or UV filters, but most require power for a pump (to push the reverse osmosis through) or for UV light. When the power is off, they cannot filter. This can work with gravity feed - my stock is a tank about 12 feet above the filter and I'm getting about 1 liter per minute through the filter into a smaller stock tank with a ball float valve so I have about 20 gallons of drinking water ready to work at any time. This is great for the plumbing system. For a portable or temporary solution, Sawyer Point One or Point Zero Two filters are great alternatives.
