I used it in my workshop/shop. We needed weather channels and a backup battery because we live in Hurricane Central, Florida. We are in the peripheral reception area for both FM and AM so a strong digital tuner was essential. After reading the previous reviews I decided to jump on it, although I winced at the price. I'm glad I did. The tuner is powerful, catching stations I couldn't see clearly before. The volume is ok (I think some others had problems with the volume being low). It's actually more than okay - I can wash my car in the driveway and listen to the radio in the back of the garage at 60% volume without hearing aids. I quickly checked how it works with batteries (I don't usually have them) and everything was fine. I don't know battery life. The instructions are clearly written so that programming is not a problem. I guess it's so good because, as others have pointed out, it doesn't come with a bunch of superfluous stuff you don't need. The manufacturer apparently invested money in the development of the base, and I think it was worth it.
