The trick is to use it upside down.

I bought this because it looks like the chopper my mom used when I was a kid. I tried using it as shown on the box, but the walnut halves are too big for chopping fingers to pinch. My first thought was that it was useless, but then I tried something else: I remembered that when my mother used hers, she would put nuts in a jar and turn it upside down. I tried this and it worked very well. Then the hack teeth could easily grab and chop the walnut halves. If you bought one and are not happy with it, try it upside down.
