Review on Quality Built 6492SN DDomestic Starter New by Bobby Blanton

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good starter, read about installing on Tahoe 4X4

Decided to change the motor going through 3 phases of a dying starter then slow (wah wah noise) then ticking noise of the Tac-solenoids and, finally, tapping a wrench to wind it up. I replaced the starter motor on a 2002 4X4 Chevy Tahoe Z71 and believe me it's no easy task. In a 4X4, the front axle reduces ground clearance to a minimum. Seriously, there's almost no ground clearance, the repair manual calls for removing one of the bolts holding the axle to the frame/chassis; and that was the only thing I didn't want to do, I didn't want to have to re-drill the holes to re-attach the bolt holding the front axle. So hang in there and play with only 1/8 inch of space and pry it out with a big screwdriver so I can pull it down. The old original factory starter had two external screws which made engine removal even more difficult. there was a little problem here and there (with corresponding tick-tock noises) that pushed him very hard to get into position. If you're replacing the starter on a similar Tahoe 4X4, I highly recommend raising the front of the car and getting a car with a cradle to do the job (make sure your kids aren't around because you it's running like never before). I've replaced the fuel pump on this SUV (which means the fuel tank has been removed), I've replaced the air conditioning compressor and I can tell you that both jobs were a breeze compared to removing and installing the starter motor. I am sure that for those who own a rear wheel drive version of the same car, removing and reinstalling the starter will not be a problem. After installation I started the engine. Luckily the starter works and there were no problems. But for this particular 4X4 setup, I strongly recommend that you check the starter from the outside before proceeding with the installation. I am fortunate to know that starters are factory tested prior to shipment; but what if after all this work it turns out that the new one is defective? Not only to send back, the engine was completely scratched during installation. The starter came with one bolt, presumably longer, in my case both old bolts were the same length as the new one that came with the starter. The new starter is the same dimensions as the old one except it doesn't have the 2 outer bolts and brackets. Remember to always disconnect the small signal wire from the solenoid first and it is the last thing to connect after the big battery wire. If you slip your hand while installing the starter, you don't want a small cable to support the weight of the starter. Because with the new starter I had no problems and after 30 days it still works. No problem, I give 5 stars. Below are photos of the old and new starter. If you like the review give me beats on Revain, any questions? let me know.
