Review on Black Sigma 19mm f/2.8 DN Lens for Sony E-mount Cameras (NEX) by Mark Gilbert

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good price, terrible aperture up to f5.6

This is a regular lens for regular M 4/3 work. I tested black and white and color street photography on the Lumix G7. At full aperture, this lens is pretty bad. Blurred with chromatic aberrations and overall softness. Only at f4-f5 does it start to be controlled, and at f5.6 you get good images. Not sure if this is a better solution than the original 14-42mm kit lens which also has f5.6 when zoomed in. The equivalent focal length is 38mm, which I find a bit narrow. You see, in the early 1980's I mastered 35mm film cameras (Nikon FM/FE) and the Nikkor f2.0 35mm was my main lens for street photography. For the M 4/3, nobody I know makes a 17.5mm lens that goes with it. You have Pany 20mm (=40mm) and Oly 17mm (=34mm). Pany is too narrow for me. I sent the lens back the same day I tested it. If you know what you're looking for in your final images but aren't 100% sure your hardware does the same, then change/upgrade your hardware. I am very happy with my Fuji X-T2 and X-T20 and every Fuji lens I own. I use the M 4/3 when I need something even more casual and smaller for street and travel photography. Next time I'll try Oly 17mm 1.8. and here I am.

Pros
  • Three aspheric glass lenses provide excellent correction of distortion, chromatic aberration and field of view curvature
Cons
  • Long delivery time
