I walked 50' from the TV up a wall, through the duct in the ceiling to the utility room and hooked up to the receiver for in-ceiling surround sound . The optical cable didn't work - I thought it might be my receiver and I have another one in the garage that connects the speakers via an optical cable. So I swapped the receivers - one from the basement to the garage and the other from the garage to the basement. The optic now works in the garage and the basement still doesn't work with this optic I just bought. Usual liquidation process, right? So, to double-check - I moved the receiver closer to the TV and the shorter optical cable to the free-standing speakers. Worked fine! So I did my best to make sure it was the cable and not some other component. 50 feet failed - will be returned
