Rating for Massage Therapists

This rating is for the Lumia Back Stretcher and Massage Ball. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) by trade and was keen to try one of these devices. I can only say: WOW. It works. If you have any type of back pain this will really help a lot. As a tool, the back stretcher is made out of two layers of hard plastic with a hinge on one end and a series of notches on the other. You fold the top layer (the one with the foam strip) and tuck the end into one of those notches, depending on how stiff you want the bow to be. Then place the instrument on the floor (rug, yoga mat, whatever) and lie on it so that the stretcher adjusts to the natural curve of your lumbar spine. The top layer requires rough handling. fit in the "extended" slot. The plastic is hard and doesn't really want to bend that much. However, this gives the instrument its stability. Given the natural curve of my back, slot #2 definitely works best for me, which is why I use it. Remember: You don't have to go as far as Slot #3, most "or heavy arches". This will not suit every body type. I will probably never use this position because it promotes hyperlordosis in me or TOO MUCH curvature in the lumbar spine.. The top layer has small hard protrusions in fixed places that I can take for a touch of acupressure.. I was afraid that those lumps are painful but you don't feel them at all As an LMT I'm not sure they really do anything because they aren't deep enough to really penetrate muscle or connective tissue and you don't move them slowly so no myofascial relaxation occurs. Maybe they feel better than lying on flat plastic." I don't know. Don't worry about those bumps. They won't do any harm. The real gem is a strip of soft, luxurious foam. In the center. It calms the spine and feels *amazing* I want to lie on them all day Massage balls are a bonus for myofascial relaxation and getting deep trigger points They are about as stiff as a lacrosse ball but much heavier and denser. I have never owned a peanut shaped myofascial ball so it was nice to add it to my collection. Remember: DO NOT use these or any other massage balls or foam rollers on the lower back (because of the 11th and 12th ribs) or sternum (because of the xiphoid process.) These areas have brittle bones that are minimally connected to other structures and are therefore susceptible to stress fractures when pressure is applied is exercised on them. I see many clients with chronic back pain due to pelvic floor/girdle issues and will recommend this device to them in the future.
