I upgraded from 1st Gen Intel Core i7-920 to 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8600 and the difference is like night and day. I use my computer for software development, not gaming, but I'm very happy with its speed. I used to have constant slowdowns and pauses, although I'm not sure if this was caused by the HDD, the CPU, or a combination of both, but now when using this new CPU along with a 1TB SSD, there is there no stuttering anywhere, on any program. I have a three monitor setup with no dedicated graphics card so I'm pretty sure the CPU has to do most of the work for the GPU and for the software I use different versions of Visual Studio along with image editing software (and to a lesser extent for video editing). software), font editing software, and many other miscellaneous other development tools. When idling, the CPU temperature seems to hover around 36-40 degrees Celsius, and during operation it can hit the high 50s, low 60s. Since I bought the 8600 version and not the overclocked version of the 8600K, I pre-applied thermal grease to the stock CPU heatsink and fan. The heatsink is fairly small and the fan points straight up, blowing air away from the processor to the side of the case. I used this for a short time, but quickly became annoyed with the sound of the fan spinning faster when the temperature hits 40C, so I bought a larger third-party heatsink with heatpipes and a fan that goes on the back of the PC case shows where the vent hole is. I also bought a graphite thermal pad so I don't have to mess with thermal paste. This combination doesn't seem to lower the CPU temperature at all, but it does make the fan much quieter, and that's the whole point. No matter what you use your computer for, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the processor, but if you're worried about fan noise constantly speeding up and down, then you should definitely get the best CPU cooler.
