This is a pretty well thought out detail. It gives you different options for using it, including mounting the camera on the top or bottom. The turnbuckle on the slider has some plastic on the end to protect it and not scratch the carbon fiber rods. I don't know how long it will take, but it seems to be enough. Very smooth operation. Rolls beautifully. Easy to level. A suitcase is nice to have too!
