I'm new to the aquarium and I was wrong when I thought my aquarium had a cycle when it didn't. When I added my first fish (a month after installation), my ammonia level exceeded the maximum on the test strip. The test water was dark blue, almost black! I used it for its intended purpose. At one point I had a massive bacterial bloom and couldn't even see my fish, but continued to test and use as directed, along with daily 10-20% water changes. The water cleared up within a week. Haze is a good bacteria killer. Harsh but not harmful if your water is sufficiently oxygenated. Whatever happened to the water, my fish were active, happy, and maintained good color. After three weeks my good bacteria have taken over and there is no more ammonia. To be honest I'm shocked no one has died because of a mistake I made riding a bike in an aquarium and I think ammoloch is the reason. I have oto cats, serpae tetras, ghost tetras and swordtails in a 40 gallon planted tank.
