This is my third Brother machine and overall I'm happy with the product but it's not perfect. There have been many reports of tension issues with this machine and yes I find this a problem. It seems it still doesn't work no matter how I adjust the voltage. I've tried googling the problem and doing all the necessary steps - change thread, change needle, change bobbin, etc. and nothing seems to work. There is a feature on the machine that when you stop sewing it will do another stitch to finish in the bottom position (you can change it to finish as well), when the machine does that it will stay on big buttonhole. my stitch line. As I like many of the other features and it's a new machine it looks like I'll have to service it (still under warranty so I'm hoping they can fix it). Otherwise the machine is quiet, I find the light to be just the right brightness, threading and winding the bobbin is easy and I really like the adjustable speed. Essentially you get what you pay for. If you sew weekly or do a lot of heavy work, this machine may not be for you. If you sew occasionally as a hobby or just to fix things, this machine will work just fine (assuming you can fix tension issues). Also compared to my 20 year old brother who is all metal and weighs a ton it feels "cheap" as it is mostly plastic and very light. I think it's more a sign of the times as most modern items are made more of plastic parts than metal. First, you MUST thread the machine with the needle AND presser foot in the UP position. I used to thread my old machine sewing foot down to get a better view of the needle, but with this machine it's important to have it in the up position! Also, the manual states that "5" is the average tension for the main fabrics (cotton, cotton blends, polyester, etc.) - however, this is NOT the average for this machine. I have to sew at 3 to 4 tension for main fabrics and it helps a lot! Also, in my review above, I pointed out that when the needle ends in the down position, strange loops appear on the thread. I changed it so the needle ends in the up position (instructions are in the manual) and this solved the problem. So don't give up! Solving some of these problems can be painful, but it's worth it once they're fixed!
