Review on Advanced Hotloop Digital Oven Thermometer - Ultra Heat Resistant up to 572°F/300°C by Tom Timmer

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Works great, but not as a cooking thermometer for the oven.

My rating doesn't reflect a negative judgment on the quality of the instrument (it seems to measure the temperature accurately) but as the name says it's an oven thermometer I'll give it a 2/5 to reflect that , which I think most people intending to use it as a home cook or baker will be disappointed. I was hoping to use it as an external oven thermometer as my regular oven thermometer works great, but I can't see the reading without opening the oven door (thus lowering the temperature). The problem is that by its very nature, the oven temperature is always changing: if you set it to 350 F, the heating elements or gas flame will turn on until the thermostat decides the temperature is close to that temperature, then turn them off for a while and then turn it back on when the thermostat detects the temperature is dropping too much, and so on, over and over again. So your 350F oven is not a straight line at 350F, but a sine wave with an assumed average of 350F, oscillating between, for example, 325F and 375F when switched on and off. when they are in the oven where they should be) have a large lag in the temperature readings. If you take the thermometer out of a hot oven and place it in room temperature air, it takes a long time for the reading to drop all the way down to reflect the surroundings, and vice versa. This delay smooths out the extremes of instantaneous temperature readings and sets the average temperature, which is actually the data I'm looking for as a baker/chef. This thermometer constantly updates its readings. So if you put it in the oven it's very hard to tell what the average temperature is. You can only tell if you are in an upswing or a downswing. Even in a properly heated oven at 350F you will see fluctuations up and down, so using this thermometer to ensure your oven is at the desired temperature is impractical. If they had a version that shows a 2 minute moving average, it would probably do exactly what I was hoping for. The search continues.
