My vacuum sealer is so old it predates the ubiquitous accessory port found on every sealer of this millennium but it still works great so I was looking for an alternative for the Routine (non-canned) evacuation of food storage jars. Bleeding the brakes was the obvious choice. It might sound odd to a mechanic, but when it hasn't been used for automotive fluids, it's identical to hand vacuum pumps used in science school labs, and it's food safe (not that it's ever been in direct contact with anything other than air would have come). . Most of my kitchen appliances are actually standard labware that would fit in a university chemistry lab, so they fit perfectly and work very well. The gauge reads 30psi and I was able to get a vacuum of 25psi. PSI with the Foodsaver glass adapter. Granted, that's a lot of pumping, so I figured maybe it shouldn't all live in a vacuum all the time (that noodle jar kids open every day? Sugar? LOL). a longer lasting solution, but one that doesn't require replacing an excellent sealant.
