Review on (Old Model) Toshiba Canvio Connect 1TB Portable Hard Drive by Robert Aan

Buying a hard drive can be a crappy shootout. All hard drives fail over time

Buying a hard drive can be a crappy hunt. Eventually all hard drives fail. The trick is to try and find the one with the best track record. I needed a 1TB laptop to easily drag and drop music, photos, videos and documents so I could free up space on my laptop. For about a week I tried to decide between WD and Seagate. I've read numerous reviews online complaining of some issues with both. I turned down a WD drive because of all the complaints about using the downloaded software, faulty cables, poor customer service, and a one-year warranty. The Seagate Backup Plus 1TB had some complaints about Windows suddenly not recognizing it after disconnecting and reconnecting, so I started looking at Canvio Connect. If you read the reviews it's obvious that Canvio has some complaints too, but since it was selling locally for less than I could buy from Revain I bought it. So far, so good. I've been connecting a 1TB Canvio Connect to my 3 year old Windows 7 laptop with USB 2.0 ports for the past 3 days. I transferred, erased and re-transferred 75GB MP3s. I plugged it directly into a USB port and also through a cheap Belkin 4-port USB hub. The transmission speed (USB 2.0) is 13 MB/s. The drive is virtually silent, didn't get hot during transfers and hasn't given me any problems so far. I'm not using the software that came with it. I can test it, but for now I'm just dragging files to disk. I gave 4 stars based on the local retail price (64.99) and the plug and play simplicity I've experienced so far. I will come back in a year and give 5 stars if reliable.

Pros
  • A complete backup solution to protect your digital memories
Cons
  • I'm worried
