My cat started scratching my new carpet and I needed something to cover where she was scratching. She liked to sleep on a chair near the carpet, and when she woke up, she stretched and scratched the carpet a few times. I bought this mat to cover the area where it scratches. As with all scratching posts/objects, you need to show your cat that they should be scratching the mat, not the carpet/whatever. I put a rug in that area and scraped the rug in front of her, I also put some spearmint on it to pull it onto the rug. Make sure you give a treat when your cat starts scratching the mat to emphasize that scratching the mat is good behavior. The size of the rug itself is 20 x 20 inches. It's made of sisal and the underside of the mat has a rubberized texture to keep it from moving. Overall a good quality product for the price.
