I bought it to use with the iPhone in the car. There is a cable in my car, but it is for the original Apple connector (pre-lightning cable). I tried using a port adapter but couldn't get it to work, basically it didn't work. This small device connects to a 12 volt adapter. It automatically found the correct FM frequency and before I knew it I was playing music on my iPhone through my car stereo. Additional power adapter port to charge your device at the same time. I bought a very short cable to avoid extra cable. The only thing that bothers me is that sometimes the connection gets a bit static or drops easily when walking through an area where an FM signal is interfering with the use of this gadget. Still a great device that I highly recommend if you don't have a device in your car that natively supports your phone.
