Vernier calipers are a very useful part of a woodturner's tool kit, used to measure spindle size and wall thickness in turning bowls. They try to add value by providing an actual scale rather than just a visual indication of size, but they fall short in several areas. They are too small for most applications. A good set of swivel calipers should be at least 5-6 inches tall. I suppose a pen driver could use them, but I don't think they are accurate enough for this application. The scale, which is in the metric system, is very difficult to read. The numbers are tiny and dark and was difficult or impossible for me to read when the dish was installed on my lathe. The construction isn't very good - the metal is poorly finished, with a thick layer of chrome plating that doesn't hide the flaws in the finish. Pivot points are connected to nylon washers and will loosen with use. In short, I do not recommend them for woodturners.
